|Title||1939 World's Fair Designers|
|Object Name||Print, Photographic|
Photograph of a display of "Fashion and Fabrics" on view in the Hall of Exhibits of the Administration Building of the New York World's Fair in 1939. There is a mirror in the photograph which makes the image deceiving. From left to right there are three mannequins then the mirror in which you see the reflection of the same three mannequins as well as two more. All of the evening gowns shown are made of velvet, have slender silhouettes, and are shades of copper. Designers were Jay Thorpe, Henri Bendel and Berfdorf Goodman.
From left to right:
The first gown features a pleated skirt with a slight train and a wide band singing the waist. It has gathered 3/4 length sleeves, gathered side seams on the bodice, and a deep v-neck. The gown is paired with an ostrich feather headpiece.
The second gown features a pleated skirt with a front slit revealing an under layer which has diagonal stripes of floral details. There is a wide panel singing the high waist and a narrow jeweled band between it and the skirt. The bodice of the gown drapes over the shoulders and bust with gathers at the shoulder seams and floral detailing below the bust. This gown is paired with a feather side-headpiece and a jeweled cuff bracelet.
The next gown has narrow shoulder straps, a tightly fitted and gathered bodice, and a long skirt with a train and side slit. There's a long sash of fabric attached to the bust by a brooch and draped over the shoulder hanging down to the train. This dress is also accompanied by a feather headpiece wrapping over the head ending under the mannequins chin.
The next gown is strapless with excess fabric hanging from the bust down to the hemline. This mannequin is also wearing a necklace.
The last gown on the far right has an open back with shoulder straps the connect behind the neck. It also has a deep v-neck, gathers on the side seams of the bodice, and a high waist. There's a broche at the front waist and a long skirt which has diagonal pleats at the top and a train.
