She worked for the first three presidents. She came to WKU in 1910 and retired in 1953. She was born in Bowling Green and attended St. Columbus Academy and graduated from the Bowling Green Business University. In 1971, at the age of 81, she past away. History - West Hall, (the building’s first name-given because of its occupancy of the Western slope) was an all-girls dorm when it first opened. It had three stories with a lobby and bedrooms to accommodate 200 girls. The bedrooms were a suite style which had one bathroom between two bedrooms. There was also a much larger room on the second floor that was used for conferences, recreation, study, and general use. On the third floor was an infirmary. This was equipped with metal hospital furniture, diet kitchen, and living quarters for the school nurse. The girls could visit the nurse at no extra charge. The building was constructed of "Bowling Green stone." During WWII, air force troops were stationed in the building. In 1977 the building was converted into a "continuing education center." However, in 1980 the building was converted back into a woman’s hall because of a housing shortage. In 1984, the dorm was shut down because of declining women enrollment. During that time, the building was rented out for conference rooms and office space. In 1987, the first two floors of the dorm became a co-ed dorm. The third and fourth floors were used for the "Continuing Education" program, the sheriff’s academy, and university guest housing. The building now houses the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science. The building as described in the Teachers College Heights, Vol. 11, No. 2, April 1929: The new dormitory for girls known as West Hall located on the west side of the campus is a magnificent structure of Bowling Green stone. It is absolutely fireproof, modern and up-to-date. The rooms are arranged in suites consisting of two rooms and a bath. Every bedroom is equipped with modern furniture, which includes twin beds, bed-side table, study table, dresser, two straight chairs and one rocker. On the main floor is a spacious lobby beautifully furnished with seats, tables, chairs and floor lamps. On the second floor is the big recreational and study hall. This hall is provided with victrola, chairs and tables an dis the general meeting place of the girls for fun and conference. On the third story is the infirmary entirely separated from the remainder of the building. Kitchenette, isolation ward, convalescent ward and living quartes for the nurse are included in this department. West Hall will accommodate about two hundred girls. The rooms range in price from $6.00 to $9.00. All suites are furnished and arranged exactly alike, the difference in the prices being determined by the location. Miss Susie West McClanahan, a woman of experience and training, together with some able assistants, have charge of this hall. The idea is to make the organization homelike and cheerful, putting the girls largely on their own responsibility and yet requiring that it be an excellent place to study and a wholesome place spiritually to live. Additions - Renovations in 1959, 1963, 1965 1977 - ground-level entryway and stairs added to the front, elevator installed |
